My Father

Before I was in the womb

He had my days all planned

Then He blew life into my soul

And shaped me with His hand.

He knows intimately my Name—

My thoughts, my dreams and aims.

He knows my destiny: my deep groan—

The thing that only I can see when I’m alone.

I’ve always been in His care

Even before I ever saw Him there.

His Face has always been toward me

Never once been annoyed or ignored me.

He’s a righteous rock, a moral mountain

Yet a tender giver and forgiving fountain.

He’s never once made me drink his bitterness

Instead feeds me with his grace and forgiveness.

He doesn’t ever let me off the hook

Whenever I fail I see that look—

I can’t explain it though!

Divine Love that used to be sad?

Perfect Mercy that used to be mad?

He’s never once abused me

Nor for His own gain used me

He’s never swore in my face

Nor assigned to me His disgrace.

His mouth has only blessed

With kindness and peace

Undeserved grace for sure

He even stoops and entreats!

He’s pledged to be faithful

Forever, come what may!

He’s my Shepherd and King

My Deliverer, Hope and Stay

He’s my Friend—

The most famous under the sun.

He wants me again and again

And is gladdened that I am His son!

An orphan I’ll never be.

I’ve been adopted eternally.

He’s never left me alone

Nor will he til I come Home.

Father, you’re perfect in every way.

I praise and worship you today.

No other father can do what you do,

But help me be at least a little more like you!
